Charging a car battery is a great skill to have in case you find yourself running low on juice. While this can be a great temporary fix, a prematurely dead car battery can be a sign of a more serious problem for a mechanic to solve.

Make sure that you have a car battery charger device on hand. Leave it unplugged from the wall until you attach the jumper clamps to the positive or negative terminals on the car battery. Be sure that the black handles are paired with the negative ends on the battery. The red ones go with the positive terminals. Turn the charger on after the clamps are securely in place. The device will show on its display screen when the car battery is fully charged.

It is always best to leave the car battery charging until the full charge is complete. This helps preserve the life of the battery.
