If you’re looking for an SUV that’s capable of holding a multitude of passengers while delivering optimal performance in a luxurious atmosphere, both the 2023 MDX and Pathfinder are great options. However, the level of care and artistry put into the new Acura MDX is unlike anything we’ve ever seen in this type of vehicle, and we’re thrilled that we’re here to witness it.
* Performance *
To start, the 2023 Acura MDX comes standard with a 3.5L V6 engine capable of 290 horsepower. This trim level is built with a double-wishbone front suspension that brings you a low center of gravity for taking smooth and precise corners. Next up we have the 3.0L Turbo V6 engine that you can only get in the Type S version, supporting 355 horsepower along with other driving technologies such as Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, larger Brembo front brake calipers, quad exhaust outlets, and available air suspension that lets you adjust your MDX’s height whenever you need the extra ground clearance. The long wheelbase and ultra-rigid chassis promote a comfortable ride with reduced ambient noise and vibrations. The variable-ratio steering already gives you better precision, but the electric power steering booster gives you better maneuverability.
The power behind the new Pathfinder is still better than your average SUV thanks to the 3.5L V6 engine capping at 284 horsepower, albeit still short of both MDX engine types. When it comes to the design of the vehicle itself, the biggest thing to note is the rigid chassis for more stability as you drive. And as far as tech goes, you have Idle Start/Stop along with Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist. That being said, although the Pathfinder still provides an adequate ride, the MDX just offers much more as performance is Acura’s forte.
* Safety Features *
With all of the exciting and thrilling rides that the power of the MDX encourages its drivers, it was a great show of responsibility on Acura’s part to include one of the most substantial safety feature arrangements that we’ve seen in most of the cars that we’ve handled thus far. AcuraWatch is already to be expected since the brand loves to include it as a standard package in all of their vehicles, but it’s still incredibly impressive nonetheless. As far as additional safety features go, you have extra tech like a Surround-View Camera, Blind-Spot Information System, Rear Cross-Traffic Monitor, and Low-Speed Braking Control as well as an intuitive head-up display for all of your essential information ready to be evaluated right on your windshield. And along with the passing of many crash tests, it’s no wonder that the 2023 MDX won the 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award!

The 2023 Pathfinder has most of the same safety features through their ProPILOT Assist and Safety Shield 360 packages on top of an around-view monitor, head-up display, and various intelligent features.
* Interior *
After stepping into the new MDX, it’ll make sense as to why we’re always so ecstatic when showing it off during a test drive. Aside from the amazing performance, the atmosphere of the cabin and the incredible technology will have you wanting to pack your bags and move right in. The 12.3-inch center display is controllable through an easy-to-use True Touchpad Interface, the panoramic moonroof is wide enough to invite an open space, and 95 cubic feet of cargo space lets you bring almost anything you can imagine. You can upgrade to a premium interior complete with Iconic Drive Ambient Cabin Lighting and high-grade materials throughout the cabin such as hand-wrapped leather and open-pore wood. For the Type S variant, you’ll have access to additional features such as:
● Massaging front seats
● Quilted leather seats
● Signature Edition ELS Studio with 25 speakers
The Pathfinder shares similar aspects to the MDX like a panoramic moonroof, Wi-Fi support, and a wireless charging pad but the cargo space is about 15 cubic feet smaller, the touchscreen display only goes up to 9 inches, and the Bose audio system only comes with 13 speakers.
* Bottom Line *
If you want a true performance SUV, you’re sure to get a better experience with the 2023 Acura MDX. The Pathfinder is still a good vehicle in its own right, but it can’t quite match the amount of care that’s been put into the MDX. This is a purchase that you absolutely won’t regret!
