Is The Acura NSX’s Future Electric? What We Know l Maus Acura

Production on Acura’s flagship supercar, the NSX, has ended as we know it. Acura only brought 300 of the 600-horsepower 2022 Type S models to the U.S. market, with all of them selling out in 24 hours. While this production cycle has come to an end, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the NSX. Acura’s Vice President and brand officer, Jon Ikeda, has hinted that there could be an interesting future for the NSX—one that’s all-electric. Here’s what we know about the future of the legendary Acura NSX.

The Outgoing NSX

When first unveiled in 2015, the second-generation NSX was already groundbreaking, and well ahead of the hybrid supercar game. While competing models from McLaren and Porsche were already on the scene, the NSX hit the market with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 and a whopping three electric motors for an impressive 573 hp and four-wheel drive. In short, the second-generation NSX was revolutionary.

As production came to a close earlier this year, fans of the supercar were left wondering about its future. Then, Honda teased some big plans for the next decade, including the launch of two “sports models,” one specialty vehicle and one flagship vehicle. Acura lovers immediately began speculating that that “flagship” could be another NSX, and some recent comments by Acura’s VP have strengthened those rumors even further.

An All-Electric NSX?

Speaking with Nikkei Asia, Jon Ikeda addressed rumors about a third-generation NSX. Asked about whether production was forthcoming, he stated, “I would bet on it.” He also mentioned that if his prediction is correct, the next NSX would be all-electric.

Ikeda went on to describe what kind of car the new NSX could be, aside from its electric drivetrain. He wants the new supercar to not only offer the blistering acceleration that’s common in the electric supercar world, but also the ultimate in handling.

Building off the outgoing NSX’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, the new NSX could be a technological showcase for exceptional handling. Most electrified supercars seem to have incredible specs on paper but are less engaging to drive than their gas-powered counterparts. That’s a niche that Acura’s NSX could fill. While Honda has yet to give the project the green light, fans are hopeful for an all-electric reboot of the legendary NSX.
